Academic Fun & Fitness Camp

Expect the unexpected in this unique camp. It’s an exciting experience for campers with special learning needs. Campers gain new perspectives on learning while developing social skills, building self-esteem, and improving basic reading and math skills. Campers learn, have fun and exercise.

This unique camp is for children ages 6 to 14 with learning differences -- ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, learning disabilities, and many more; and cognitive disabilities: Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, and cognitive delay; and at-risk or struggling learners. Many of these children become so frustrated by school experiences that they never experience fun while learning.

At this “un-school” camp, instructors and aides use systematic instruction and multi-sensory techniques (eyes, ears, touch and muscle movement) to improve campers’ basic reading and math skills. The ratio of campers to staff is 5 to 1.

Science, theater, and computer mini-courses let campers explore the world beyond the traditional classroom. One of the most popular activities is the play in which the campers write, direct, and act. Each camper participates in the play and receives a DVD of the performance.

One pleased parent says, “Kudos to the Academic Fun & Fitness Summer Camp for providing a constructive, tolerant environment that really helps kids with challenges. My son looked forward to a new experience each day.”

Now in its seventh year, the camp has been extremely successful and has grown each year to accommodate a few more campers. Many parents and campers in the 2007 camp expressed a desire to return to camp again this year.

The Academic Fun & Fitness Summer Camp is six weeks long, from June 16th through July 25th with both full-day and half-day sessions. Conveniently located at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, camp fees include lunch, snacks, and activities. Before-camp and after-camp care is available. Call 440-914-0200 for more information.
